One week in Istanbul part 1

I love lists, yes, and mostly if they are about exciting destinations I want to visit one day. And one of this destinations on my list is Istanbul and i made the “check” last week. I was spending 7 days in this vibrant city. One of the most amazing things about Istanbul first you are in Europe and 15 minutes later you are in Asia or better said Middle east. That situation makes this city a “must” for every curious traveller. Here some of my favourites moments about food, drawing, university visit and more. Teşekkürler Istanbul!

Eminönü (The Old part)

First thing you will do is visit the old part where all the tourist attractions are located, we were staying on the other side of the Galata bridge in the neighbourhood called Beyoğlu and it was very easy to cross by walk and visit many Mosques, markets and restaurant/street food.

Sultan Ahmed (blue mosque): Called this way because of the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior.

Hagia Sofia: it was first a church and now it´s a Mosque from outside, it is beautiful inside.

Süleymaniye Cami

Yeni Cami (New Mosque): It is the first mosque you will see from the galata bridge and you have to go inside, it has so many details on it walls.

Grand Bazaar: It´s very nice to see from inside but the offering are mostly gold objects and things you can find in other stores too.

Eminönü Market (Spices Market) : This one was my favourite much better and nicer then the Grand Bazaar to buy and try things. Avoid it on weekends if you don´t want to bu stuck in the crowd.

Topkapi Palace

Don´t miss the Harem inside the Palace, it´s wonderful

cintiq companion road show

As you already know I love to draw on paper, but I also love to draw on any type of device that can allow me to draw with precision. I use Wacom products since forever and I own a Cintiq 22 HD and an Intous 2 (yes an old one but it still works!) and when the Cintiq Companion came out I was very interested to test one to see how it feels but they sell them only on their online shop! But I was happy yo hear they were coming to Berlin to give users the chance to try it and I was of course there to check them out.

The venue was really nice and without any restriction I was able to try the new cintiq Companion and it is awesome! It feels like drawing on paper and Because i´m a cintiq user I feel it very comfortable for drawing. The size is also ok, I don´t know if I will take it with me to draw at the park or for long trips but for working on different offices it can be a winner. Here is the drawing I did while I was there,

The performance is really good and I think you can use all Adobe products without any problem, even I found it weird some of Adobe´s software are not so compatible with touch. The nice info guys explained me that you can add features with the touch strip so I was able to zoom in and out with a programmable button.

This was my short review of my short experience with a cintiq Companion and I wish one day I will be able to buy one. Here some more photos of the event

Drawing for Hahnemuehle

Last weekend was a busy one. I was drawing at Hahnemühle booth in Franfurt during the Paperworld Fair for 3 days and it was a great invitation for me to be there showing my drawings in different types of papers and sketchbooks. Hahnemühle is a traditional paper manufacture located in Dassel, Germany and produce a variation of paper for art and also for print. They also produce sketchbook and I used them a lot, so they invite me to share my experience at the fair with the visitors. I love to use their travel journal , style sketch and Sketch & Note collection because they have different sizes and I can carry them always when I travel or take a ride with the subway.

They also did a Raffle to win one sketchbook with one of my drawings in it.

And if the guests asked me to I also drew them a Pablo Bear.

It was a great weekend and I had a lot of fun! thanks to Hahnemühle for the nice time and to invite me to be there.

VisitBerlin Roadshow 2013

The end of 2013 is approaching  and i want to share a project i did with Markenreise and VisitBerlin last October. They invite four artists from Berlin (Paul Petzel, Saphira Kunst, Paula Liz & me) to be part of a Roadshow around 4 german cities introducing Berlin as a location for events. Our job was to visualize over a big framed picture of different berlin locations the advantages of do events in Berlin. We had 2 sessions of 15 minutes of live drawing in front of 10 -20 guests in each location. It was a fun job, first for the travel itself and second for the nice people i met on this “art” trip. Here some pictures at the different locations we visited. Thanks to Mike Auerbach, the official photographer for sending me the pictures and to the Markenreise and VisitBerlin team!

book writing

Last week i started to write the contents of the book and it´s kind of hard for me, because i never wrote more then 10 pages in my life. But i´m finding it very nice to do it after finishing all the drawings of the book. I can´t show much but here is a small preview. I will try to post more pictures next week, have a nice weekend!

Best device for drawing on the road

Hello readers, since i´m an artist and i really love to travel who really loves to draw, I´m asking myself which digital device could be good or perfect for taking with me while traveling and be effective if i need to finish a job on the road. Since last year we are seeing many new tablets with digitizer and stylus mostly licensed by Wacom. My idea is to find a device that give the possibilities to sketch while flying or taking a bus to the Himalaya. I really like to sketch on paper and it´s still my favorite device for the road, it´s not heavy, looks good and has a lifetime battery life (since you don´t loose it or bring it near fire). But i changed my mind since i start to use a Wacom Cintiq 22 HD at my office. I really love this device, it´s speed up a lot the way i work and it make my work far more accurate then the intuos or bamboo tablet. So i will put my thoughts in this post expecting your comments on which device should i get or if i should wait to get far more exciting devices soon.

Surface Pro

surface pro

The surface pro is a 10.1 inch tablet/notebook from Microsoft. It has great reviews around the web and so far i can read poor battery life. But it has a digitizer and stylus, and it works like the cintiq 21UX with 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity. The great thing about it, it has a full windows pro OS on it, means i can sell my macbook pro 15 inch and take it to my trips as the only device. And the best part i can still edit my comics and illustrations on photoshop and edit After effects files for clients too! The launch price for the 64GB model was 879 Eur and now you can find it for 665 Eur at some retailers on the web here in Germany. Maybe it´s not as accurate as a Cintiq 22 HD but i can still finish and coloring my files on the road. Here some great reviews to take reference of professionals using it Penny arcade and Jonathan Case

Cintiq Companion

cintiq companion

The guys at wacom did a great job this year and launch 2 new devices the Cintiq Companion and Companion Hybrid. The companion is a full windows 8 pro device, ir means like the Surface pro you can use all the pro applications on it! it sounds like a great deal, but for me the dowside is the size. It´s 13” and i didn´t get the chance to see it but can be to big to carry it while traveling far away and work. And the other dowside is the price at 1899 Eur here in germany at wacom´s  web store . It´s a bit to expensive if you think you will carry it with you all the time. But so far the specs and workflow is a hit! so if you think you can spend the money i´m sure you will get a super machine for work.

Samsung Note 10.1

Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition

Samsung is very experienced on bringing stylus technology on their devices so i was also thinking of buying on of these Note devices. But it´s based on Android OS and i love it, but i love it on my phone not on my laptop. The lack of professional software is still a problem for me. It doesn´t means you can´t get the job done,. It´s a great device for drawing and sketching on the road but it´s not a full computer, so if need to finish some after effects files i need to carry also my laptop with me. And happily there are other device that can fill both purposes. The good point for the Note is the price at around 300 Eur for the 2012 version and 499 Eur for the 2014 version.

The Big question

And now the big question, which one should i get? i think the Cintiq companion is still too expensive for this purpose and i already have a Cintiq at my office. The Note is the cheapest version of “great Sketching and Drawing device” for the road but the lack of software can be a problem for me. And the Surface Pro is my favorite but they release a new version the Surface Pro 2 right now but it´s almost 200 EUR difference between the first and the second version right now. What do you think? Should i wait or should i get the Surface Pro 64 GB right now?
